Model Overview

The BEIJING X55 is a C-segment SUV under BAIC Group’s BEIJING sub-brand. First introduced to the Chinese domestic market in 2016 as the "Senova X55", the model underwent a full model change around 2022 to become the new-generation BEIJING X55. Positioned as a key strategic export model, it is marketed in regions such as South Africa, Spain, and Mexico. Built on BAIC Group's latest BMFA modular platform, the architecture supports both internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. As a global model, the BEIJING X55 is offered in several variant trims across overseas markets, going head-to-head against established segment rivals such as the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.
Design Language
The new-generation BEIJING X55 adopts a sleek, avant-garde design language. The front fascia stands out with a parametric frameless grille and sharp LED headlamps, while the LED daytime running lights (DRLs) on both sides are linked by a black trim strip to visually widen the vehicle's front stance. Along the sides, sleek character lines are paired with flush pop-out door handles, adding a high-tech touch while enhancing aerodynamic efficiency. Around the rear, the design features strong horizontal layering, where full-width LED taillights complement the rear roof spoiler, with selected variants further sporting quad exhaust garnish trims for a distinctive, sporty look.
In terms of dimensions, taking the overseas specification as an example, the BEIJING X55 measures 4,620 mm in length, 1,886 mm in width, and 1,680 mm in height, with a wheelbase spanning 2,735 mm—placing it squarely in standard C-segment SUV territory. Inside, the cabin focuses on digital sophistication and technology, typically fitted with a floating or integrated central touchscreen paired with a full digital instrument cluster. Overseas models offer an optional or standard 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 10.1-inch central infotainment touchscreen. The interior also features multi-colour ambient lighting, eco-leather upholstery with heated and ventilated seats, as well as a 0.81-square-metre panoramic sunroof, lending the cabin an upmarket feel.
Powertrain & Performance
Under the bonnet, the BEIJING X55 is powered across the range by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 130 kW (approx. 177–188 PS) and a peak torque of 305 Nm. The engine delivers a broad torque curve, pulling peak torque between 1,500 and 4,250 rpm, making it particularly well-suited for stop-and-go urban driving.
Power is sent to the front wheels (FWD) via a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). Top speed is rated at 200 km/h, while the official 0–100 km/h sprint is completed in 7.8 seconds. In terms of fuel economy, it records a WLTP combined fuel consumption figure of around 8.0 L/100 km and a WLTC combined figure of 7.35 L/100 km.
As of mid-2025, the BEIJING X55 remains exclusively powered by this internal combustion engine powertrain, with no plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or battery electric (BEV) variants available, placing it in emissions rating Class C.
Chassis & Handling
The chassis setup of the BEIJING X55 is a standout, featuring front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension across the range. In the compact SUV class, the rear multi-link independent setup delivers an ideal balance between handling dynamics and ride comfort. The suspension damping is tuned for comfort, easily soaking up road bumps and imperfections for daily family duties. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system offering a light, effortless feel. Braking duties are handled by disc brakes all round, backed by a comprehensive suite of electronic stability systems. Drivers can also toggle between four selectable drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Smart—to cater to varying road conditions and driving preferences.
Cabin & Equipment
The BEIJING X55 comes generously specified with cabin amenities and technology. Higher-spec variants feature a dual-screen digital cockpit comprising a digital instrument cluster and a large infotainment touchscreen, complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Also standard are Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports, keyless entry, and engine push-start button. On the comfort front, top-spec variants boast heated and ventilated front seats, driver's seat memory function, multi-colour ambient lighting, an 8-speaker sound system, and a powered tailgate with anti-pinch protection. Boot capacity starts at a standard 350 litres, with split-folding rear seats allowing for expanded cargo utility.
Safety & Driver Assistance
In terms of safety, the BEIJING X55 offers a robust suite of active and passive safety features. Built around a high-strength body structure, it comes standard with 6 airbags across the range. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are a key selling point, featuring Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) , and an automated parking assist system. Additional driving aids include a 360-degree surround-view monitor, front and rear parking sensors, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), and Electronic Stability Control (ESP), making daily driving both safer and more effortless.
Market Performance & Reception
The BEIJING X55 is a cornerstone of BAIC Group's global export strategy. Since 2022, it has been marketed globally across Africa, the Middle East, South America, and Europe. Sales performance has notably flourished overseas while remaining subdued back home: in China, the original Senova X55 saw modest uptake with around 31,300 units sold in 2016, eventually dwindling to single-digit monthly sales before being officially discontinued in the domestic market. Overseas, however, backed by BAIC's technical partnership with Daimler, the BEIJING X55 found renewed traction post-2022, driving notable year-on-year export sales growth for the BEIJING marque.
From an automotive media perspective, the BEIJING X55 has garnered favourable initial reviews internationally for its sharp styling, comprehensive equipment list, and competitive price point, proving capable of challenging established mainstream contenders. Owner feedback has praised its spacious cabin, though some drivers noted tyre noise at higher speeds as an area for improvement. On the whole, the BEIJING X55 stands as a flagship example of BAIC Group leveraging global resources for export markets, charting a new path for Chinese automakers moving upmarket via global rebranding and synchronized overseas rollouts.
